How to build a Gundam?

My current building procedure is very basic. It involves no painting, but flat coat and panel lining.

  1. Snip all the parts out of the runner.
  2. Sand down the “nubs”. Nubs are the little bumps left over from the runner.
  3. Put the parts together to build the Gundam.
  4. Use a Gundam Marker to line all the panel lines.
  5. Give the Gundam a nice flat coat.

I will airbrush in the future,  and when I do, I will give you my new procedure. Until then, I will have to save money to get my air brush and air compressor.

    i have 3 MG mobile suits 1/100 scale and plan on painting…
    i decided to practice on my HG 1/100 wing zero :)

    1. cut all parts
    2. sand all irregularities
    3. wash in soap/detergent water all pieces (prep for primer application)
    4. apply primer (Tamiya grey surface primer) required so that paint will stick better to your plastic model.
    5. apply paint (ill be using spray paints / cant afford air brushes yet)
    6. apply protective coating (not still sure about this ill experiment yet… they say it will help protect the paint when you apply the lining/weathering etc decals…)
    7. apply lining (was planning on using pen 0.01 0.05 point… but i realized using a paintbrush fine tip with diluted paint is better and easier… just wipe off any excess with cotton buds before paint dries)
    8. finally apply top coat (yes Flat is better).

    ok thats my plan of action and its easy said than done, my first time to do this hehe, still waiting for my paints to arrive, probably month of may i can start…

  4. lol :) we all have to start noobish at some point :)

    additional tip :

    after applying paint on your kit,
    apply PLEDGE with future shine Premium Floor Finish!
    hehe weird? i read this at Fine Scale Modelers Magazine… (this will protect your paint-i’ll be trying it, others use some sort of varnish instead)
    then apply your panel lines, decals…
    then apply the FLAT TOP COAT for protection…

    I’ll be making my own blogsite (can’t decide yet which Google or WordPress), but no rush since im still not done with my kits… want to post photos :)

  6. cool site, I’m trying to get into building gunpla as well but it’s so damn intimidating @_@

    just brought back a 1/144 HGUC Dendrobium kit from Japan, dying to build it but too afraid to touch it until I get some more experience, lol..

    anyway, will be practicing on some smaller kits in the meantime.. sure I’ll have lots of questions..

    i recently finished applying primer to my HG wing zero kit using Tamiya gray primer spray… and believe me guys out there who still cant decide to paint or not afraid to get mess? Just do it! me im happy at the moment with the primer, my wing zero looks solid and not plastic :) cant wait to apply the paints soon!……..

  9. ah nope… already cut from runners… coz i assemble all first then disassemble… then fix (sandpaper/seam lines/etc)… then primer – i hold them using barbecue sitcks and aligator clips for each part or group! (about 6-8 inches) they look like hotdog on stick when waiting to dry :) with the gray primer applied it will show all errors or irregularities of your work, if still problems fix it then apply primer to that area again…
    when all seems goody u can paint now… ;) the primer is Flat so no worry about spraying it wrong, u can sandpaper it if too much… then spray again if needed…
    the important thing is spray the primer after u have fix your kit of any irregularities (seam lines, excess glues, nubs etc…)

  12. How come my panel line ink, which have been inked with gundam panel marker GM01, seems melted away after sprayed it with top coat? Is it because of the chemical content?
